Degaussing system DEG COMP MOD 2

The degaussing system “DEG COMP MOD 2” is versatile and suitable for use on all classes of naval vessels as effective protection against detection and/or destruction. It compensates the permanent, induced and eddy current magnetic fields disturbances of naval vessels in order to meet the specified signature requirements. In addition to systems for ferromagnetic ships and submarines, specific solutions are also available for non-ferromagnetic ships such as mine countermeasure vessels.

The system is controlled and monitored by the computer-based Degaussing Control Unit (DCU), which accommodates the HMI and interfaces to the other main system components. For control and monitoring, standard interfaces are provided.

Advantages

In comparison to conventional degaussing systems the Actemium degaussing system DEG COMP MOD 2 offers the following system inherent advantages:

  • Flexible system design allows adaptation to any kind of submarine, boat or ship
  • Optimised power consumption allows use on boats with limited resources.
  • Small component dimensions allow flexible integration into small envelopes.
  • De-centralized system does not require a dedicated room, components can be placed space-saving (e.g. below stair cases etc)
  • Design for use of flexible coil cables to reduce installation efforts to a minimum
  • Galvanic insulation of all degaussing coils, integrated insulation test to avoid leakage currents in case of earth faults
  • Full redundancy of current set-value generation by means of two independent data sources with built-in test functionality
  • Load configurations (e.g. compensation of cargo)

System configuration

The degaussing system “DEG COMP MOD 2” is versatile, suitable for deployment on all classes of naval vessels. It is capable to compensate the permanent induced and eddy current magnetic interference fields of naval vessels to specified target signatures. It´s non magnetic design allows deployment also on Mine Countermeasure Vessels (MCMV) and on non-magnetic submarines.

  • Degaussing control unit

    The computer based Degaussing Control Unit (DCU) is the central control unit of the system and serves as the user interface

    The system automatically calculates the required sum current for each degaussing coil in real time, which is composed of the permanent-, induced- and , as an option, the eddy current content.

    The DCU receives the current magnetic field data from the magnetic field measurement system (triaxial probe). For the case of a failure of the triaxial probe, the geophysical map is used as database together with the input from the navigation system. In emergency mode, the navigation data can also be set manually.

    On the basis of this calculation each degaussing power amplifier generates the required DC sum current to feed the related connected coil.

  • Power supply unit

    Different types of power supply units are available, suitable for use on smallest non-ferromagnetic ships or submarines or bigger ferromagnetic submarines or vessels such as corvettes, frigates or aircraft carriers.

    Depending on the respective type of vessel the “DEG COMP MOD 2” two different coil supply concepts are used:

    Coil Layouts

    • Centralized Coil Supply Concept

    The centralised coil supply concept for vessels with a dedicated degaussing room. This design provides a weight reduced solution in a central cabinet.

    • De-Centralized Coil Supply Concept

    In the decentralised concept, the power supply units are self-contained and are arranged near the connected coil allowing significant savings of cables and space since no dedicated degaussing room is required.

  • Intelligent terminal

    The Intelligent Terminal provides features for magnetic signature prediction of the vessel to the ship’s command according to the actual operational conditions. The Intelligent Terminal can be employed together with Actemium SAM Electronic’s degaussing system technology “DEG-COMP” or as a “stand-alone” equipment.

    The Intelligent Terminal is provides the following additional functionalities:

    • Compensation of failed coil
    • Signature prediction
    • Mine hazard calculation
    • Remote control function
